Abstract
176,368. Bethenod, J. March 1, 1922. Track apparatus actuating signals on trains. - A signalling relay or repeater on the train is supplied from the same source as the traction motors and is controlled by a switch operated by the track signal. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the car 1 carries collectors 2, 2<1>, one of which makes contact with the line wire 3 to supply current to the traction motors. A second pair of collectors 5, 5<1> are connected through the coil of the repeating relay 4; one of the collectors is in contact with the line 3 while the other makes contact with a short insulated rail 6 on the track. A switch 9 controlled bv the signal arm is connected between the rail 6 and an earthed resistance 8. The relay 4 remains de- .energized unless the switch 9 is closed when the car travels over the rail 6, in which case the relay operates and the signal is repeated on the train. The resistance 8 prevents the traction circuit from being short-circuited when the - collectors pass over the rail 6. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the relay 4 is normally energized as it is connected between the line 3 and an earth 7 on the train. Gaps are left in the line 3 and opposite each gap is placed an insulated rail 6 slightly longer than the gap. The switch 9, when closed, connects the rail 6 to a line wire 10 supplied similarly to the line wire 3. The relay only operates when the collectors are on the rail 6 and the signal operated switch 9 is open. The rail 6 may be placed in the gap in the line 3 and to ensure proper connections at crossings &c., several pairs of signalling collectors may be provided on the car.
