Be it known that I, AINSLEY L. J ONES, 2d,
a citizen of the United States and residing at Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, in the,
means at predetermined points along the tracks of the system for controlling the progress of one or more electric cars or trains movable thereon, in other words, to' provide what is commonly known as an automatically operated electrical block system which will operate in the manner of similar block systems on electric transit andiother railway systems now in use on numerous railway systems throughout the country,
and with this and other objects in view. the invention consists in an apparatus of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation, and efficient in use, and which is constructed and operated I as hereinafter described and claimed. i
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have diagrammatically illustrated one use of my improved block system in which 10 represents an approximately rectangular track construction within which is an approximatel elliptical track 11 forming part'of the track system 10 through a switch construction shown at. 12, said switch construction being composed of two parts or sections 13, controlled by separate switch levers 14 and 15. It will be understood, of course, that my invention is not limited to any specific arrangement of track and the combination illustrates one use of 'switch' sections in a complete system.
All of the tracks in the system shown in Fig. 1 constitute inner and outer side rails 16 and 17 between which is a central or third rail 18 from which electric current, from a suitable source 19, is taken by an electric locomotive or car 20 partially illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and which carries electric contact rollers, one of which is shown at'21 in said figure. The construction of the track and locomotives or cars forms no part of this invention and said track and cars may be constructed in any desired manner, the above construction being shown for the purpose of clearly illustrating my invention and the method of its use.
In Fig. 1 I have diagrammatically illustrated at 22, 23, 24 and 25 four of my improved signal post constructions cooperab ing with the track system shown and all of which are constructed in the same manner, and in Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have diagrammatically illustrated the post construction 23 in' detail and the method of its con- .nection with the track system, or one of the sections or parts 26 thereof.
I a signal arm 29 carrying red and green translucent panels 30 and 31 adapted to cooperate with an electric lamp or bulb 32 mounted at the upper end portion of the post 28. The bulb 32 is placed in electrical connection with the rails 17 and 18 through circuit wires 33 and 34. The construction of the semaphore and the light bulb also forms no part of this invention, butv is merely shown to clearly illustrate the op-'- eration of my improved block system.
Pivoted to the base 27 is an approximately triangular plate 35 to one comer portion of which is pivoted a rod 36, which is pivotally connected with the signal arm .29, as clearly ,shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, and pivoted to the other corner portion of said plate is a rod'37 which extends. forwardly or in the direction of the rails of the track section 26, downwardly through an aperture 38 in the bottom of the base 27, and forwardly within a cut-out portion 39 of said base and is pivoted to a lever 40 pivotally mounted within the cut-out ortion 39 of the base as indicated at 41 in ig. 3 of the drawing I also employ an electro-magnet 42 which is mounted upon the base 27, and an armature arm 43 pivoted at 44 cooperates with said magnet, and one end portion of said arm is connected with the rod 37, as clearly shown in Fig.' 2, *and' connected with the other end of saidarmature; arm is a coil sprin 45 the tension of which may be adjuste by a screw 46 mounted in a suitable support 47. The electro-ma'gnet 42 is placed in directcelectrical communication with the rail'17 through a circuit wire 48 and is adapted'to be placed in electrical communication with the rail 18 through a circuit wire 49 which connects with an automatically operated switch device 50.
The switch device 50 is pivotally or rotatably mounted upon the base 27 and provided with three projecting contact fingers 5'1, 52 and 53, the finger 53 being insulated from the other two fingers 51 and 52. The switch device 50 ,is placed in mechanical connection with the lever 40 through a rod 54, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig; 2, and shown-in full lines in Figs. 7 and 8,

I also employ in connection with the track system a ground rail 55 which, in the form of construction shown, is preferably located at the inner side of the rail 17 of the track system shown, and said ground rail forms The are coupled together as illustrated at 56 but the connectionbetween the ground rails is broken as shown at 57, wherethe signal post constructions are located in the railway system and intermediate of said signal post constructions, said ground rail is continuous or unbroken. The part 58 of the ground rail of the section 26 is placed in "electrical connection with the contact finger 53 on the switch device 50 through a circuit wire 59, while the contact finger 51 of said switch device is adapted ,in. one position thereof to cooperate with the other part 60 of said ground rail on the track section 26, this po-- sition, of the switch device being illustrated in Fig.7 of the drawing and also indicated in dotted linesin Fig. 4ofthe drawing.
As previously stated each of the signal postconstruc'tions'22 to 25 inclusive will be constructed in the same manner as the post construction 23 specifically shown and described herein, and the operation of the apparatus in. the progress of an electric locomotive or a train on the track system shown .in Fig; 1 will be as. follows, it being assumed that the locomotive or train is traveling on said track system in the direction of the arrow :12 in Fig. 1. For the purpose of description it will be assumed that the post construction diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 7 is the post construction 23, and that shown in Fig. 8 is the post construction 22, and that the locomotive or train has just passed the signal post construction 23, and the operation will be as followsl- Prior to the passage of the locomotive or train by the signal post construction 23, or before said locomotive or train reached said post construction, the post construction 22 or the various parts thereof, were in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 7, While the various parts of the post construction shown in Fig. 7, were in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 8, and immediately upon the' passage of the signal post construction 23 by a locomotive or train, the switch device 50 is o erated or moved into the position shown n Fig. 7 from a position similar to that shown in Fig. 8, by a downwardly di-' rected finger 61 carried by the locomotive or train and which is indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. The operation of the finger, 61 is indicated in full and dotted lines in Fig. 4 as is also the movement of the switch device above set out. The result of the above operation will reverse the position of the vav rious part-s of ,the post constructions 22 and 60 of the ground rail as is clearly illus- 23 herein specified or will bring them into the positions shown in Figs. 7 and 8. of the drawing, in other words, the signal arm of the post construction 22 which was previously set at danger or in approximately horizontal position will be moved to an inclined position as shown in Fig. 8, and the signal arm 29 of the post construction 23 which was previously in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 8 will be moved into an approximately horizontal osition, or at danger as illustrated in Fig.
It will be apparent that as a train or locomotive progresses over the track system, or as it approaches and passes the separate signal post constructions thereon, the above operations will be produced and the mechanical as well as the electrical operations of the separate post constructions will be as follows. The electro-magnet 42 is energized or an electric current is passed therethrough when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 8, and the armature is moved by said electro-magnet from the position thereof shownin Fig. 7 against the tension of the spring 45, which operation moves the switch device 50 from the position shown in Fig. 7 to that shown in Fig. 8 through the lever 40 and rod 54 and in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 8 thecircuit between the ground rail 55, or the part 58 thereof; and the rail 18 is broken as is also the connection of the switch device 50, or the finger piece 51 thereof, with the part trated in said figure, but when a train or locomotive passes the switch device 50 and moves the same into the position shown in Fig. 7, it will be noted that the circuit is broken through the elect-ro-magnet 42 as illustrated in Fig. 7, and the armature is moved into the position shown in said figure by said switch device through the lever 40 and rods 54 and 37, and the spring 45 aids in this operation. The signal arm 29 of the semaphore is also moved from a position .similar to that shown in Fig. 8 to the position shown in Fig. 7 in the above operation, by reason of the mechanical connection-of I said signal arm with the rod 37 through the rod 36 and triangular plate 35, and this operation is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig.
3 of the drawing.

In short, as a train or locomotive passes a signal post construction, the signal arm and various other parts of which are in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 8, said parts are automatically moved into the position shown in Fig. 7, in the manner hereinbefore stated, and at the same time, or in the same operation, a signal post construction previously passed by the locomotive and in which the signal arm thereof andvarious other parts were in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 7, will be automatically moved into a position similartothat shown in Fig. 8, in the manner hereinbefore set out, thus producing an automatically operated block system for railway apparatus of the class under consideration.
It will be understood that the construction hereinbefore described will constitute a complete operative block system, but in order to make the same more effective in operation and use, I preferably employ in connection with the separate signal post constructions 22 to 25 inclus ve, means for automatically stopping a locomotive or train as it approaches the signal'farm of one or more of said post constructions set at danger or in a position similar to that shown in Fig. 7, or as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. This result is accomplished by mounting in connection with each of the signal post constructions a supplemental rail 62 composed of non-conductive or insulating mate rial, and in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the drawing this rail is shown in detail in connection .with the track section or part 26, which forms a part of the signal post construe drawing. The end portion 66 .of said rod is bent downwardly and transversely beneath tion 23 is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, and when said signal arm is moved into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in the manner herein set out, the operation of the lever 40 from the position shown in Fig. 8 to the position shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing will move the rail 62 i into the position indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, in which position the top face of said rail extends above the top face of the rail 18 as shown in full lines in Fig. 7.. of the drawing, and the contact rollers 21 carried by the electric locomotive or train 20 as they approach the rail 62 will be raised out of engagement with the rail 18, thus breaking the circuit through the rail418, and said contact rollers resulting in the automatic stopping of the motor on said locomotive or train. It will also be apparent that when the various parts of a signal post construction are automatically returned -into the 'position shown in Fig. 8 from a position similar to that shown in Fig. 7, as hereinbefore set out, the contact rollers 21 will again be brought into contact with the rail 18 by reason of the movement of the rail 62 into the position shown in Fig. 8 or in full lines in Figs. 5 and 6. v
In view of the foregoing it'will be apparent that if two locomotives or trains are operating on the track system a collision will mental rails 62 similar in all respects to the' rails 62 employed in connection with the separate signal-post constructions but which are operated by rods 67 and, 68 connected therewith, and with the opposite ends of a lever 69 pivoted to a suitable support at 7 O, and to one end portion of said lever is connected a rod 71, which is also connected with the switch operating lever 14. With this construction in the operation of the switch lever 14 to open or close the switch 13 thereof, the rails 62 which areoperated through the rods 67 and 68 will be moved into such position as to stop a locomotive, ,or train if it attempts to enter or pass an open or closed switch, or a switch which is not set in the proper position as to permit of the successful passage of the locomotive or train over. the track systemand through said switch. In other words, if the switch be in the position shown in Fig, 1 the train may pass around the track 10 and through the switch,
position shown in Fig. 9 will permit the train to' roceed without any'inconvenience or dniicu ties whatever. The above operat1on w1ll be reversed if the locomotive or train attempts to enter the switch as shown in Fig. 9 when the'train is progressing on the track 10/ I It will be understood that while I have shown numerous details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, and illustrated a specific form and arrangement of track system, I am not necessarilylimited to these details, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. J
The automatic locomotive or train stopping mechanism involving the supplemental rail 62 composed ofinsulating material and the various parts connected therewith is not specifically claimed in this case for the row son that said mechanism may be used independent of the block system, if desired, and

An automatically operated block syswith current carrying rails comprising a plurality of signal post constructions located at predetermined points along the track of a railway, said signal post constructions being provided with signal elements, electrical r v .means in said signal post constructions 1n electric circuit with the current carrying rails of the track for operating said signal elements in one direction, mechanical means in said si'gna-l post constructions for operating said signal elements in the opposite direction, means on a locomotive or car ada ted to coiiperate with the last named means of said signal post constructions for automatically operating the signalelements thereof in the passage of said locomotive and rails cotiperating with the means for actuating said signal elements for automatically stopping a locomotive or car approaching a signal post construction, the signal element of which is set at danger.
2. An automatically operated block systerm for miniature electric railways provided with current carrying rails comprising a plurality of signal post constructions located at predetermined points along the track of a railway, said signal post constructions being provided with signal arms, electrmmagnets on said signal post constructions and normally in electric circuit with the current carrying rails of the track, armature arms coiiperating with said electro-magiiets and in operative connection with said signal arms, said electro-magnetsbeing adapted to operate said signal arms in one direction, mechanical means involving electri'c switch devices in operative connectidn with said signal arms and adapted to move" said arms in the opposite direction, and means carried by the locomotive or car for automatically actuating said last named-means and; said switch device in the progress of said locomotive or car on the track and by the separate signal post constructions.
3. An automatically operated block system for miniature electric railways provided with current carrying rails comprising a plurality of signal postconstructions located at predetermined points along the track of a railway, said signal post constructions being provided with signal arms, electro-magnets on said signal post constructions and normally in electric circuit with the current carrying rails of the track, armature arms coiiperati'ng with said electro-magnets and in operative connection with said signal arms, said electro-magnets being adapted to operate said signal arms in one direction, mechanical means involving electric switch devices in operative connection with said signal arms and adapted to move said arms in the opposite direction, means carried by the locomotive or car for automatically actuating said last named means and said switch device in the progress'of said locomotive or car on the track and by the separate signal post constructions, and a ground rail extending longitudinally of the track, said rai'l being interrupted adjacent to the separate signal post constructions, of said railway and in electrid circuit with said switch devices.
4. An automatically operated block 'system for miniature electric rdilways provided with current carrying rails comprising a,
cotiperating with said electro-magnetsand in operative connection with said signal arms, said electro-magnets being adapted to operate said signal arms in one direction, mechanical means involving electric switch devices in operative connection with said signal arms and adapted to move said arms in the opposite direction, means carried by the locomotive or car for automatically actuating said last named means and said switch device in the progress of said locomotive or car on the track and by the separate signal post constructions, a ground rail extending longitudinally of the track, said rail being interrupted adjacent to the separate signal post constructions of said railway and in electric circuit with said switch devices, and said switch devices being adapted to place said ground rail in electrical communicationwith one of the current caroperate said signal arms in one direction,
mechanical means involving electric switch devices in operative connection with said signal arms and adapted to move said arms in the opposite direction, means carried by the locomotive or car for automatically actuating said last named means and said switch device in the progress ofsaid'ldcomotive or car on the track and by the separate si a1 post constructions, a ground rail exten ing longitudinally of the track, said rail being interrupted adjacent to the separate signal post constructions of said railway and in electric circuit with said switch devices, said switch devices, being adapted to place said ground rail in electrical communication with one of the current carrying rails of the railway, supplemental rails composed 0t insulating material movably mounted in connection with one of the current carrying rails of the railway adjacent to the separate signal post constructions, and means for placing' said supplemental rails in mechanical connection with the means for operating said signal arms whereby when the signal arm of one of said signal post constructions 1s Y set at danger the current to the locomotive or car approaching said signal post construction will be vbroken.

Thecombination with one of the track sections ofan electric railway system, said track sections being provided with current carrying rails; of a suitable base, a post mounted on said baseand provided with a movable signal arm, anelectro-magnet on sa1d base, an armature arm codperatlng w1th said magnet and m operatlve connectlon with said signalarm, a three point switch device movably mounted on the base, a ground rail forming part of said track section, said rail being interrupted at a predetermined point onsaid section to divide the same into independent parts, means for placing one of said parts in electrical conmovable signal arm, an elect'ro-magnet on said base, an armature-arm codperatlng w1th tion, said rail being interrupted at a predev nection with one of the points of the switch device the other points thereof being insulate from said last named point, said other two points of said switch device being in electrical communication with said electro-magnet andone of which is adapted to coiiperate with the other part of said ground rail while the other of said pointsis adapted to cotiperate' with one of the current carrying rails of said track section, and said-electro-magnet beingplaced in. electrical communication with the othercurrent carrying rail of said track section. v

The combination with oneof the track sections of an electric railway system, said being interrupted at a predetermined point on said section to divide the same into independent parts, means for placing one of said parts in electrical connectlon with one of the points of the switch device, the other points thereof being insulated from said last named point, said other two points of said switch device bein in electrical communication with said e ectro-magnet and one of which is'adapted to coiiperate with the other part" of said ground ralil while the other of said pointsis adapted to cotiperate with one of the'current carrying rails of said track section,-. said ,electro-magnet being placed in electrical communication with the other current carrying rail of said track section, said switch device being in operative connection with said signal device, means carried by a locomotive or car movable over said track section for automatically ope-rating said switch device to move the samein one direc-' tion, means whereby when the circuit is antomatically completed through said electromagnetsaid switch device will be moved into the opposite direction, and a supplemental rail composed of insulating material movably mounted in connection with one of the current carrying rails of said track section, and said supplemental rail being in operative connection with the means for actuating said si a1 arm.

A block system for miniature electric railways comprising a plurality of electric signal post, constructions located at predetermined points along the track of a railway and provided with electric elements, the electric elements of said signal post constructions being in electrical connection with the current carrying rails of the railway track, mechanical means in operative connection with said signal post constructions for automatically operating the signal elements thereof to move the same into danger positions in the progress of one or more electric locomotivesor cars over the track of said railway, and means involving rails composed of insulating material in ,operative c0nnection with said mechanical means for automaticall stopping a locomotive or car as it ap roac es, signal post constructions, the signa elements of which are set at danger.

A block system for miniature electric railways comprising a plurality of electric signal post constructions located at predetermined points along the trackv of a railway and provided with electric elements, the elec tric elements of said signal post constructions being in electrical connection with the current carrying rails of the railway track, mechanical means in operative connection with said signal post constructions for auto: matically operating the signal elements thereof to move the same into danger positions in the progress of one or more electric locomotives orcars over the track of said railway, means involving rails composed of insulating material in operative connection with sald mechanical means for automatlcally stopping a locomotive or car as it approaches signal post constructions, the signal elements of which are set at danger, and electrical means for automatically moving said last named means into inoperative position to permit of the progress of said locomotive mlned points along the track of said railway and provided with electric elements, the electric elements of said signal post constructions being in electrical connection with the current carrying rails of the railway track, mechanical means in operative connection with said signal post constructions for automatically operating the signal elements thereof to move the same into danger positions in the progress of one or moreelectric locomotives or cars over the track of said railway, means involving rails composed of insulating material in operative connection .with said mechanical means for automatically stopping a, locomotive or car as it ap proaches signal post constructions, the signal elements of which are set at danger, electrical-means for automatically moving said last named means into inoperative position to permit of the progress of said locomotive or car on said track, and means involving a rail com osed of insulating material for automatica 1y, stopping a locomotive or car about to enter a switch construction in the track of said railway.
14. The combination with a miniature railcomotive or car having contact members adapted to engage one of said current rails, of a block system comprising-a plurality of electric signal post constructions located at predetermined points along the tracks of the railway and provided with electric elements, the electric elements of said signal post constructions being in electrical connection with the carrying rails of the railway, and mechanical means in operative connectionwith said signal post constructions for automatically operating the signal elements thereof to move the same into danger positions in the progress of one or more electric locomotives or cars over the track of said railway.

The combination with a miniature railway having current carrying rails and I structions being in electrical connection with the carrying rails ofthe railway, mechanical means in operative connection'withsaid signal post constructions for automatically operating the signal elements thereof to move-the same into danger positions in the progress of one or more electric locomotives or cars .over the track of sald rallway, and
means involving rails composed of insulatin material in operative connection wlth sald mechanical means for automatically signal post cpnstructions the signal elements of which are set at danger.
