Abstract

Securing pulleys, gearwheels, coupling - members, bearing-races, &c. on shafts by the expanding-action of a hollow shaft a, Fig. 3, slit along one side. The shaft. which is drawn bright from strip iron and may be of any shape in internal and external crosssection, is slightly tapered at the ends and, after compression, is forced into the somewhat smaller bores of the wheel hubs b, which need not be finished by a reamer. Journal surfaces are provided by securing sleeves c to cover the slit. The friction may be increased by forcing in lengths of split tube e, and the strength of the shaft augmented by building it up of two or more concentric slit tubes. For heavier drives, keys are inserted in the slit of the outer tube f, Fig. 9, which slit is either made broader for this purpose or is locally widened by milling, as shown at h.
