Abstract

275,855. Smith, R. Dec. 31, 1926. Drilling-machines; drills and cutters.-In machines for cutting square or rectangular apertures wherein the drill or cutter is guided by a shaped cam rotating in a fixed opening, the opening is formed by sockets arranged round the sides of a square and rotatable about axes inclined to the axis of rotation of the cam. The cam 5, Fig. 9, is guided by a square aperture 4 and the drill 9, having three cutting edges, as shown in the Figure, forms a square hole 13. The arcs 5<e>, 5<g> of the cam are described about a centre 10, and the arcs 5<h>, 5f about centres 10<c>, 10<a> respectively. The sides of the guide 4 are formed by rollers mounted by means of ball bearings on inclined spindles, two rollers being arranged one above the other on each side of the square. The cam 5 is connected with the driving spindle 6, Fig. 1, by means of a flexible coupling comprising a disc 7 engaging the spindle and cam by means of keys b, c. The drill may be formed with a dove-tailed end w<1>, Fig. 4. Milling-machines.-For producing dove-tailed grooves having square ends in wood or metal, the dove-tailed cutter is first fed axially into the work to cut a square opening and the work is then fed laterally for the required distance.
