Abstract
275,761. Royce, F. H. June 24, 1926. Fluid - friction vibrationdampers. -In apparatus in which a hollow double ended piston works in a closed cylinder and in which the compression chambers at the ends of the cylinder are connected by passages provided with spring-controlled valves, the spaces available for liquid under compression vary in shape against the reaction of springs, before the valves open. The piston is reciprocated by a spindle b, liquid being drawn into the ends of the cylinder, when necessary, from a reservoir partly surrounding the cylinder a through non-return ball valves a<12> and passages a<9> connected to a filter member a<8>. A chamber is formed in one end of the piston between a diaphragm d<2> and an auxiliary piston e<1>, the position of which is controlled by an outer helical spring e<4> and an inner helical spring e<11> opposing the outer spring. The inner spring is enclosed in the tubular stem e<2> of the piston e<1> and bears against the end flange e<10> of this piston and also adjacent a nut on the end of the pin e<5> secured in the diaphragm d<2>. The piston e<1> is normally located across the centre of the thickened part d<4> of the main piston, being located in this position by the spring. When the piston moves to either side of this position, it engages the ends of the thickened part d<4>, these ends having longitudinal grooves so that liquid can then pass in either direction. Passages e<13> in the piston walls connect one end of the cylinder to the chamber at the opposite end of the main piston. During the first part of the movement of the piston in either direction from its central position, the auxiliary piston e<1> remains stationary, this movement being only resisted by the spring e<4>, e<11>. Further movement of the main piston results in flow of liquid past the piston e<1> through the grooves in the thickened part d<4>.
