Shoes acting on drums.-In an internal expanding shoe brake for vehicle wheels, two braking segments are arranged side by side in the brake drum and are connected with the operating mechanism so that one segment is operative during the forward running of the vehicle and the other segment during the backward running. In the construction shown, a multiple-armed lever mounted on a pivot d has one arm e connected by a rod f to the free end of one brake segment b, which is effective during the forward running of the vehicle, and a second arm g connected by a rod h to the other brake segment c. The lever is also provided with a third arm k associated with the operating mechanism through the medium of a short lever l with ball heads at either end or, in a modification, through the medium of a single ball head arranged in the swivelling axis of the wheel.
