Abstract

275,571. Electrical Research Products, Inc., (Assignees of Wente, E. C.). Aug. 4, 1926, [Convention date]. Loud-speakers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms. - An acoustic device, such as a loudspeaker, comprises a sound chamber, a diaphragm therefor and a plug in the chamber, a substantial portion of the diaphragm being stiffened so as to vibrate as a piston and the base of the plug being in close face to face relation with the stiffened portion of the diaphragm but less closely spaced at its periphery near the sound outlet passage. The diaphragm, plug and chamber are preferably so shaped and arranged that converging sound passages are formed leading from the centre of the diaphragm and from its peripheral portion, respectively, to a common sound passage. The cross sectional areas of these converging sound passages increase as the common sound passage is approached and are such that substantially equal volume displacements occur in each of these passages in response to the displacement of the diaphragm. In the construction of loud-speaker shown, a metallic plug 23 in the form of a spherical sector is secured by lugs 24 and screws 25 in a housing 20, which is suitably shaped internally, the radius of the plug being slightly smaller than that of the dish-shaped central portion 17 of the diaphragm. The outer portion of the diaphragm is formed with a corrugated portion 18 and flat portion 19, which is clamped between the housing 20 and the portion 15 of the electromagnetic structure. The converging sound passages from the central and peripheral portions of the diaphragm respectively meet the common sound passage at the throat of the exponentially tapered horn 26. A coil 14 is secured to the periphery of the stiff central portion 17 of the diaphragm by means of a strip 30 of stiffened fabric material or thin light-weight metal. The ends of the coil 14 are positioned along corrugations in the flexible portion 18 of the diaphragm and secured to screws 31, 32 electrically connected to terminals 33, 34. The electromagnet comprises a hollow annular core 10, winding 11 and annular pole pieces 12, 13, the top portion 15 being detachable to permit assembling of the winding 11 on the core structure. The space at the mid-portion of the core 10 is closed at each end by wire gauze members 27, 28 and a sound absorbing material 29. Specification 275,567 is referred to.
