Abstract

274,773. Stump, O. C., and Stump, E. R. April 21, 1927. Collision - guards. - In a bumper-bar for a motor vehicle of the kind which has associated therewith electrical means for giving an audible or other signal when an obstruction is encountered, the horn or other signalling device 25, Fig. 1, is arranged in a circuit 28, 29, 30 with normally open electric switches 8, Fig. 4, which are enclosed in housings 2 supported by the vehicle and are actuated by push-rods 13 sliding within the housings and supporting at their forward ends a movable contact of bumper bar 14. In the construction shown, the housings are supported by brackets 3 on an upper fixed bumper bar 1, while the movements of the rods 13 are influenced by springs 18 and are limited by stops 15, 17 on the rods. Rearward movement of the rod causes the switch pin 9 to be displaced so as to close the circuit 28 - - 30 and operate the signal 25, the circuit remaining closed until the switch is re-set by hand. A relay 31 may be included in the signalling circuit and adapted, when energized, to open a switch 37 arranged in the ignition circuit of the motor.
