Abstract

273,365. Pitter, W. C. March 1, 1926. Clutches, ratchet. - In ratchet clutches for driving a rotary member from a rotary or oscillating member by means of an oppositely-directed pair or pairs of spring - controlled pawls, with means for holding in and out of operation either or both pawls of each pair, the means for rendering and holding either pawl inoperative comprises a lever carried by and adapted to be locked to the pawl-carrying member. Oppositely-disposed pairs of ratchet grips 6<a>, 6<c> and 6b, 6d, which may be of the type described in Specification 259,689, [Class 80 (iii), Linkwork] are pivoted to inclined struts 20<a> - - <d>, pivoted on a driving-member 2, so that on forward drive, they are tilted by the struts against the action of springs 22, 22<c> and caused to grip the sides of an annular groove 4b in a driven drum 4 loose on the driving. shaft 3. Faces 9<b>, 9<c> on a two-part lever 9<a>, 9<d>, pivoted on a concentric part 2a, of the member 2, are adapted to coact with the pivot-pins 12b - - <d> of the grip 6<a> - - <d> to hold the grips out of action. A spring-pressed catch 10, pivoted on the lever 9<a>, coacts with notches 3<a> - - <c> to hold the lever respectively in positions B, C, A. In the position A, the grips 6b, 6d are inoperative, and the drive is in the direction of the arrow A<1>, while, in the position B, the grips 6a, 6<c> are inoperative, drive being as shown by the arrow B<1>. In the neutral position C, drive may be in either direction. By swinging a strut 13, normally holding the leverpart 9<d> behind the part 9<a>, into the position shown in Fig. 2, where its end 13a engages a notch 9r in the part g<a>, all the grips are thrown out. In order to facilitate operation in any position of the clutch, one or both of the levers 9<a>, 9<d> may be formed as the spokes or disc of a hand-wheel or coaxial hand-wheels, the strut 13 in the latter case being replaced by a spring catch or pin engageable with registering holes in the rims to hold the wheels in the two relative positions. The catch 10 is pivoted to a spoke of the outer wheel, or several catches may be pivoted one to each spoke or spaced equidistantly on a disc wheel, and their outer ends may also be connected to a further hand-wheel rim, the inner ends being curved and arranged to lap over one another and over an axial pin adapted to allow the pivoted motion thereof.
