Air, supplying; air supply, regulating; baffles; doors.--The capacity or rating of flue boiler furnaces is increased with comparatively small structural alteration by admitting the over fire air in a rotating current by means embodied in a detachable front closing the whole of the furnace opening. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a pair of pipes 10, mounted in the firedoor and arranged to deliver air over the fire, are slit longitudinally and have their adjacent edges connected, as shown at 14, so that air enters tangentially from the supply 12. The proportion between over and under grate air is adjusted by means of a swinging baffle 18 forming part of the partition dividing the two supplies. In a Howden front, Fig. 4, a chamber surrounding the fire door and having a controllable inlet 27 delivers to an inner chamber 32 having a number of delivery nozzles each fitted with a stationary fan 34. In a third modification, Figs. 6 and 8, delivery tubes 43 are slit longitudinally and bent as shewn along the portions within the hollow front to give the air a tangential entry, the amount of air being regulated by discs 44 displaceable by arms 45 having a common operating handle 54. In the full-on position, the handle 54, Fig. 6, lies in front of the furnace door which thus cannot be opened until the air is partially turned off.
