Pencil sharpeners.-A pencil sharpener having a rotary cutter is provided with automaticl means for setting the cutter at an angle to the pencil to form an elongated cone thereon and means for bringing the cutter into another angular position to shape off the end of the pencil at a more obtuse angle. A number of cutters may be provided on the machine, acting simultaneously on different pencils. Fig. 2 shows a sharpener for two pencils 19 which are pushed from a magazine into axial apertures in spindles provided with driving pulleys, the ends of the pencils being adjacent to rotary members 14 provided with cutting means, for example sharp-edged diamonds set in supports 20. Each cutter is mounted on a support 13 provided with a lug 22 whereby it is pivoted on a common base 23 slidably mounted on the machine base 1, and the cutters are provided with pulleys 16 driven at a relatively high speed. The base 23. is linked to a bell-crank lever 11, 17 pivoted on the base 1 and connected by a rod 10 to a rocking lever 4, Fig. 1, pivoted on a standard 2 on the base 1, the lever 4 being disposed adjacent to a cam 7 at one end of a pulley-driven shaft 8, so that the engagement of the lever by the cam produces a longitudinal displacement of the slide 23 and brings the cutters into contact with the pencils, the line of contact between the cutters and the pencils being increased by the progressive displacement of the slider. A cam 6 at the other end of the shaft 8 engages a rocking lever 5 connected by a rod 9 to an arm 12 on one of the cutter supports 13, and at the requisite moment moves the support 13 angularly to effect the final obtuse cutting of the end of the pencil, this movement being transmitted to the second cutter by a link 21 connecting the cutter supports.
