Abstract

272,415. Willis, R. C. Feb. 1, 1927. Drilling-machines; portable turning-apparatus, -In a method of and apparatus for reseating valves, the reseating-tool is set in a position perpendicular to the valve-stem guide and locked there so that the cutting operation may be performed without further dependence on the valve guide. The apparatus comprises an arm 7 slotted longitudinally at 8 to receive a securing bolt 9 and having a head 13 in which a bearing 15 for the cutter arbor 2 is mounted. The arm rests on a base-block 1 attached to an internal combustion engine cylinder-block 5 by bolts or studs 4 and carrying the bolt 9 on which is mounted a bridge 10 forced into engagement with the arm by a nut 1 hand operated at 12. The head 13 is provided with an internal spherical recess 18 lined with soft metal such a babbit metal for receiving the spherical end 17 of the bearing 15, the head being split at 14 and provided with a handle and nut 20 for clamping the bearing in any adjusted angular position. In operation, a pilot 25 on the cutter arbor is adjusted centrally in the valve guide 26 and the nut 11 and handle 20 are then locked and the arbor withdrawn so that the cutter 24 may be mounted therein. The cutter is rotated to perform the reseating operation by a hand or power operated attachment 28. For trueing up the valve-stem guide a cutter 32, Fig. 4, carried by an arbor 31 is used in place of the cutter 24 and is adjusted in the same manner if the axis of the guide is inclined to the cylinder axis. When the guide axis is perpendicular to the face of the cylinder block 5, the cutter axis is adjusted by means of a sleeve 29, Fig. 1, which fits the bearing 15 accurately and which has a face 30 perpendicular to its bore for engaging the arm 7. When an entirely new seat has to be fitted the aperture for its reception is formed by a right angle cutter substituted for the cutter 24.
