Abstract

Rollers.-Coverings for the rollers of drawing and roving frames and spinning mules are made of indiarubber with which is mixed powdered mica and also, if desired, powdered kieselguhr, asbestos, or other mineral. The mica &c. may be incorporated with the rubber while the latter is in the plastic condition or may be dusted on to the rubber after it is brought to the form of the covering but before vulcanization. The covering may be in the form of a sleeve drawn on to the roller body, or on to a felt sleeve thereon, and held in position by its own contraction or by end clamping rings, or it may be in the form of a strip wound round the roller body, the abutting edges of the convolutions being bevelled as shown in Fig. 4. In the case of a long roller, the sleeve may be in sections, the abutting ends of which are slightly conical as shown in Fig. 6. The covering may have a smooth, grained or fluted surface and may consist of layers of different hardness.
