Abstract

Switching systems.-A rotary converter, transformer &c. 1 supplying a circuit 2, is relieved of a 20 to 100 per cent overload when hot by the switching in of an additional machine, by the inclusion of a resistance in the load circuit, or by the switching out of the machine itself. A current transformer 4 supplies a liquid thermal device 6, having characteristic similar to the machine, so that, when' the machine heats up, a member 14 rises, firstly compressing a, spring 37 and thereafter releasing a, pivoted catch 29, so that a contact 25 is moved to bridge fixed contacts 9. Similarly, when the device cools down, the member 14 is forced down by a spring 41; spring 38 and catch 30 functioning to give a quick break. An overload relay 8 is included in series with the contacts 9 in the current 10, so that only upon the occurrence of a predetermined overload when the machine is hot, is the circuit 10 completed to cause the starting up of another machine, or the inclusion of a resistance in the circuit 2. Undue heating causes the switch 26 to open, to effect the shutting down of the machine 1. Excessive overloads, such as due to short circuits, are dealt with by another overload device 'having an high setting.
