271,664. Tees Side Bridge &. Engineering Works, Ltd., and Peat, J. B. June 30, 1926. Block paving.-Relates to armoured roads or ways formed of metal plates or gratings 1 laid on a plastic cement or like foundation 10 which, before hardening, enters into and keys with dovetailed apertures 3 in the plates to provide a part-metal wearing surface. According to the invention, the plates are laid so that all the exposed metal surfaces extend in a direction inclined to the normal direction of the road traffic. The plates have zigzag margins 2 provided with lugs 7 and recesses 8 to enable adjacent plates to fit together. The plates may be lightened by forming grooves or recesses in the cross-bars 4, which bars may be of various shapes in crosssection and may have feet to anchor with the foundation. The plates may be employed for gully grates and manhole covers to give a uniform appearance to the road surface.
