Refrigerating, absorption machines for; refrigerating-chambers.- An absorption machine fitted to a railway car has its surfaces to be cooled arranged on the outside of the roof, floor or walls so as to be exposed to the air currents, and means are provided for reducing the supply of heat to the generator in accordance with reduced speed of the vehicle or of the air current due to the motion or to the wind. The machine shown operates on a continuous cycle and comprises a generator K, absorber A and evaporator G inside the vehicle and a condenser C on the roof. The absorber A and evaporator G contain a pressure-equalizing inert gas and the liquir circulation is effected by a heated riser coil. The evaporator has gills or vanes 14, and the absorber has a cooling-water jacket, the water being circulated through pipes 18, 19 and through an aircooled coil D arranged alongside the condenser. The generator is located in a flue 32 so as to prevent the combustion products from entering the vehicle, and the rectifier V is arranged in a ventilating shaft 33 so as to be air cooled. The heating means may consist of a gas burner B, an oil-gas burner, or an electric heater, and the regulation may be effected by a centrifugal device R, driven by bevel gear 21 from the axle and controlling a gas cock 28. An alternative regulating means comprises a flap 40, Fig. 3 extending from the side of the vehicle in the air stream and urged by a spring 41 in a direction to close the gas cock 49, but moved to open the cock when the vehicle is travelling or the wind is sufficient to produce satisfactory cooling of the condenser and water cooler. The condenser and water cooler may be protected from the rays of the sun by coverings 30, 31, Fig. 1.
