Abstract

271,272. Smith, A. H. June 29, 1926. Kinematograph picture films. - A machine for fixing a strengthening strip of metal on one or both edges of a kinematograph film comprises means for punching tongues from the metal strip, and means for engaging these tongues in the feed perforations and foi bending them round the edges of the perforations as the strip and the film are drawn by toothed rollers through the machine. In the form shown, in which a strip is secured on the film along both edges, the film 1 and strips 2 are fed into the machine from spook, not shown, through tensioning devices 61, 60 respectively. The film 1 with a metal strip superimposed on each edge passes into a guide slot formed for example between a groove in a fixed bed 8 and a plate 9, 48 and thence passes between a slide 70 carrying four piercing tools on each side, and a corresponding die 10. The die 10 and slide 70 are reciprocated by eccentric pins 11, 12 on shafts 13, 14 geared together by toothed wheels, so that at each stroke four tongues are punched in each metal strip and are passed through the feed perforations of the film. One of the four piercing tools 7 is oppositely directed to the other three 69 in order to punch a tongue which will prevent creep of the strip along the film, as described in Specification 256,548. The film and attached strips then pass under a toothed roller 17, which is intermittently driven from the shaft 13 by Maltese cross gearing to bring fresh portions of the film beneath the piercing tools. and are pressed against the roller 17 as by a roller 18, the whole of this feed mechanism being mounted in a. casing 24 which can be swung up to facilitate entraining the film on commencing operations. From the roller 18 the film passes over a guide roller 27 and between guide rollers 28, 29<a> to a toothed roller 29 driven intermittently, one tooth forward at a time, by a projection on a collar on the shaft 31 engaging a wheel 30 fast with the roller 29. Adjacent to this roller are tools 32 carried on a slide 52 mounted on arms 51 on a spindle 50 which is oscillated to cause reciprocation of the tools 32, by a lever 49 carrying at its upper ends a pin engaging a cam groove in a disc mounted on the spindle 31. The tools 32 serve to bend the metal tongues round the edges of the feed perforations. This operation may alternatively be performed by tools on the die 10; and it is preferred always so to bend the reverse tongue formed by the piercing tool 7. If no provision is made on the die 10 for bending the tongues, these may be initially bent, as they move towards the roller 29, by engagement with fixed pins of adjustable height. The bent-over tongues are rolled down by a roller 38 recessed to receive the teeth of the roller 29 and carried by an arm adjustable by a wing nut 41. The tongues are finally struck by double-sided clamping tools 42 mounted on a slide 43 which is reciprocated by an eccentric pin 44 on the spindle 31. A toothed locking device 46 carried on a spring controlled rocking arm 45 is provided to clamp the roller 29 in correct position after each feed movement. The spindle 31 is driven as by a pulley 55, and the drive is transmitted to the shaft 14 by a train of wheels 56,57, 58.
