Abstract

271,254. Langwell, H., Ricard, E., and Burton, W. A. Nov. 26, 1925. ,4cetic acid and butyric acid are prepared by the fermentation of cellulosic materials in a mash in which the hydrogen ion concentration is maintained within the limits 10<-9> and 10<5> and the nutrients supplied consist wholly or partly of waste liquors or residues from fermentation processes for the production of ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, acetone, butyric acid, lactic acid, and the like, either before or after the removal ot the useful products. Alternatively the mash may be wholly constituted by such waste liquors or residues. As an example, a mash comprising maize cobs and malt maize mash waste is fermented at about 60‹ C. Disodium phosphate together, if desired, with ammonium sulphate may be added. The cellulosic materials employed may include substances such as wood or jute which require preliminary treatment to remove lignin or to render them fermentable. Specifications 17776/14, 134,265, 161,294 and 248,795 are referred to.
