Reel and non-endless web apparatus.-Apparatus for displaying telephone &c. lists, comprises a band 10 wound on and off two rollers 6, 7 which can be engaged at will with a spring or other motor 4. The motor drives gear wheels 12, 14 loose on the shafts 8, 9 of the rollers and engagable therewith by clutches 15, 16, 19, 20 and 17, 18, 21, 22. Springs 23, 24 tend to slide the rollers 6, 7 away from the fixed clutch members on the gear wheels 12, 14, but are overcome by stronger springs 25, 26 bearing on the ends of the shafts 8, 9. A spindle 29 movable endwise in bearings 31, 32 carries cones 33, 34 one of which at a time can be brought under a spring 25, 26 to force it away and allow the clutch spring 23 or 24 to free the corresponding roller from its driving wheel 12, 14 and thus leave the motor 4 in driving engagement with only one roller. A governor 42, 43 is provided having a friction disc 41 engaged by a brake 40 on a spring-pressed rod 36. The spindle 29 carries an arm 35 which on turning the spindle presses the rod 36 and brake 40 away, and allows the motor to start and gain speed till controlled by the disc 41 again reaching the brake 40. The device is mounted pivotally in a casing furnished with a window behind which the band passes. A rest may be mounted behind the band for writing thereon, and the band and rest may be translucent and a lamp mounted in the rear. A window may be arranged at the back of the casing to display a second band driven by the same or a separate motor. A number of the devices may be mounted side by side, simultaneously driven by a single motor. According to the Provisional Specification the rollers are provided with winding-up springs of different strengths. The band is brought to position by pulling a cord wound on one of the rollers, and returned by releasing a locking device.
