Optical instruments; syringes.-In cystoscopes and other instruments for examining bodily cavities, having means for injecting liquid into and withdrawing it from the cavity, the operations of injection and withdrawal are controlled by a multiway valve i. The cystoscope shown comprises an outer tube a apertured at a<1> and an inner tube b containing the optical system. The forward end of the tube a contains a lamp c the leads to which comprise a wire d and the tube a itself. Liquid is injected, via the space x between the tubes a and b through the aperture a<1> and is withdrawn through a channel e. The channels x, e communicate at f<3> and u respectively with circumferential grooves a<3>, a<4> in a conical portion a' of the apparatus, these grooves registering with corresponding grooves f<1> , f<2> in a member f, positioned on the part a<2> by a nut g and a spring h. The member f is formed with a depending portion carrying the valve i and having conduits f<4>, f<5> communicating with the valve and with the grooves f<1>, f<2>. Conduits f<6>, f<7> communicate respectively with tangentially disposed inlet and outlet nozzles such as k. The valve i comprises a conical body having two narrow circumferential recesses i<2>, i<3> and a wider recess (not shown) adapted to connect the conduits f<4>, f<5> with the conduits f<6>, f<7> respectively. The valve is rotatable by a head i<1> so that, according to the position of a pointer i<5> in relation to markings i<6> liquid may be injected into or withdrawn from the apparatus, or simultaneously injected and withdrawn for rinsing purposes.
