Abstract
269,150. Anderson Co., V. D., (Assignees of Anderson, R. T.). April 12, 1926, [Convention date]. Extrusion presses.-The casing of a worm press is made so that it can be opened up longitudinally and the worm shaft extends beyond the casing at both ends, is detachably coupled to driving means at one end and has a combined thrust and radial bearing at the other end, the object being to allow of the removal and substitution of the shaft and worms. The casing shown is formed of longitudinal bars 1 supported by transverse members 2. The worms 23, 25 are carried by sleeves keyed on the shaft 8. The worm 23 under the feed hopper has a pitch of about twelve inches. The end 11 of the shaft is polygonal and engages a similarly formed socket in a sleeve 13 keyed on a driving-shaft 14. The shaft carries at the other end a long sleeve 27 which engages a radial bearing 31, held in position by a pin 32 in a fixed portion 30 of the press frame. The end of the sleeve 27 is threaded and a member 28 screwed thereon bears against thrust plates 29 which bear against the part 30. A nut 33 on the end of the shaft is surrounded by a collar 34 fixed by a set screw 35 and recessed to receive a pin 37, the other end of which engages the member 28. A housing 41 is provided for these parts. Liquid which may pass between the shaft and the sleeve 27 escapes through apertures 40 to a collector 39. When the casing of the press has been opened, and the parts just described loosened, the shaft can be first slid endwise and then removed. The opening at the discharge end of the press chamber can be restricted by radially-adjustable members 5.
