Abstract

614,441. Extruding-machines. DEHN, F. B. (Abbe, Inc., P.O.). April 15, 1946. No. 11537. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group II] For mixing, reducing and rendering plastic finely divided pulverulent material, the latter is fed from a hopper 4, Fig. 1, by a rotary worm T on a shaft 36 into a mixing cylinder 14 where it is subjected under pressure to a rubbing action by a rotary shaft 56 which may have either a worm surface T<1> or a plain cylindrical surface, and is discharged through an extrusion die 43. The shafts 36, 56 are each rotated by a pinion 38 and a driving motor, not shown, and the worm T<1> may be constructed and rotated to feed the material either toward the die 43 or slowly toward the worm T to increase the mixing action. The die 43 is of disc formation and is provided with extrusion apertures 47, Fig. 7, into which extend a plurality of wires 52 mounted on offset brackets 51 screwed to the recessed face of the die. These wires form holes in the extruded rodlike masses (of smokeless powder). Tubes, e.g. macaroni, may be made with a suitable die-plate. A clamping ring 44 and bolts 45 secure the die to the end of the tube 14, and the die is split diametrically to facilitate removal from the shaft 56. The shafts 36, 56 are supported in bearings 29 slidably mounted in a gibway in a base plate B and secured in position by bolts 33. On releasing the plate 44, removing the die 43, and releasing the bolts 33, the shafts 36, 56 may be slid out of the tube 14 for inspection, cleaning, &c. The tube is surrounded by a jacket 4 for a temperature-controlling medium.
