Delivery apparatus.-Sheets are delivered from a paper ruling, printing, perforating, &c. machine by tapes 3, 4 on to a board 15 which is automatically lowered by ropes 16 passing, around vertical drums as 162 which are operated by mechanism controlled by the height of the pile. The drums 16<2> are geared by worm gearing to a shaft 20, and, as the sheets are delivered on to the pile, the shaft 20 is operated at the desired intervals by a ratchet 21 and a pawl 22 mounted on a rocking arm 23 fitted with a catch 30 coacting with a trip lever 31 controlled by a runner 37 resting on the pile and mounted in ball bearings in an arm 36 on a shaft 35 fitted with an arm 34 coacting with a lever 33 connected by a link 32 to the trip lever. If the board 15 is sufficiently low to receive the sheets, the trip lever 31 engages the catch 30 and the arm 28 is prevented from being returned by a spring 28 In this position an eccentric pin 25, which engages a slot 24<1> in a link 24, causes the.link to oscillate on its pivot without operating the arm 23. When the pile rises, the trip lever 31 is raised out of the path of the catch 30, and the arm 23 is moved by spring 28 so as to cause the pawl 22 to slide backwards over two or three teeth of the ratchet 21 which is subsequently advanced as the arm 23 is moved away from the stop 29 by the link 24 and eccentric 25. The board is thus lowered and the arm 23 again held by the trip lever 31. Tne shaft 20 can be operated by a hand-wheel 42 to raise or lower the board manually.
