Abstract
268,017. Emmitt, C. G. Dec. 21, 1925. Balance or differential gearing is adapted to be locked solid when a car fitted with the invention is running straight, and to be freed from the steering-gear when a curve is to be taken. The locking is effected by plate clutches T, Fig. 1, making connection with holders 0, which can slide radially but not turn in their sockets in the planet-carrier M, which may be driven as usual by a worm Q. The holders O are normally held thrust outwards by springs H so as to lock the clutches and prevent epicyclic action. A slidable cone G bears upon the holders 0 through steel balls R. When a cam frame D, Fig. 2, is moved through suitable connections from the steering wheel, the cone G is thrust to the left of Fig. 1, and the differential is set free.
