Emulsions, making.-A colloidal solution of the products obtained by reaction between 1 molecule of phenol and about 2¢ molecules of formaldehyde is obtained by performing at least one stage of the reaction in the presence of such an an.ount of alkaline condensing agent that the products remain in or pass into solution, whereafter the dispersity of the system is reduced by neutralization and evaporation; suitable neutralizing agents are acids, such as mono- or di-chloracetic, dibromacetic, or chlorproprionic acid. the salts of which give rise to acids under the action of hot water. Examples of the process are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that instead of phenol and formaldehyde there may be used respectively the homologues of phenol, particularly m-cresol, and polymers of formaldehyde or other substances giving rise thereto. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
