Abstract
266,419. Rhodes, C. J. Oct. 29, 1925. Hollow-ware. -In automatically flanging and seaming the ends into sheet metal receptacles by rollers, the flanging curling and flattening rollers are independent of each other and the flanging and work supporting rollers are located in the vertical axis of the machine and are operated each by a separate cam mounted on cam shafts on opposite sides of the axis. A sheet metal drum to be seamed is placed between chucks 6, 7, the chuck 7 being moved forward through linkwork by the hand lever 45 to grip the drum internally. The hand clutch lever 22 is operated to start the machine which by means of cams on shafts 18, 19 carry out the following operations in sequence. The body of the drum and the end or ends are flanged by rollers 35 during which time the rollers 36 are advanced to support the drum. Rollers 35 and 36 now recede and the double seaming or curling rollers 37 each actuated by separate cams advance to produce a semi-completed seam from the previously flanged joint after which the flattening- rollers 38 advance to complete the seam. The mechanism is then stopped automatically by a cam to release the weighted clutch lever 22 and the drum is released by moving back the hand lever 45. Both chucks 6, 7 are driven from the main driven shaft 8 by chain and pulley. The headstock carrying the chuck 7 and mechanism for independently advancing the chuck by the hand lever 45, and also carrying the set of flanging &c. rollers can also be advanced or withdrawn along its roller bearing slides 42 by turning the hand-wheel 39. The shaft 4 of the chuck 6 is geared to drive the two cam shafts 18, 19 on opposite sides of the machine. Specifications 211,175 and 233,424, [both in Class 83 (iv),. Metals, Working], are referred to.
