Abstract
266,126. Bradford, B. W. Feb. 17, 1926. Hand-wheels.-Motor-vehicle steering-wheels are so shaped and disposed on the steering- column as to reduce or eliminate the radial distance between the rim and column on the side adjacent to the driver's seat, in order to provide additional space. The wheel may be of segmental shape, with a circular rim b and a chord b<1>, which may, as shown, have slightly concave curvature, the corners b<2> being rounded. The spokes c, c' are of normal length, while the spoke c<2> is short and may even vanish. In another form, the wheel is elliptical, the boss being at or near the end of the minor axis. To allow adjustment of the wheel when steering backlash is taken up, the boss d is connected to a collar (not shown), keyed on the steering-column, by bolts g engaging circumferential slots in the collar. In a modification, the boss d is provided with a series of keyways i, Fig. 4, and is secured by a nut and key j to the tapered end of the column a, which has two keyways h, only one at a time registering with a keyway i. The Provisional Specification describes also a circular wheel with an eccentric boss.
