Abstract

A vehicle steering wheel has a rim (2) connected to a hub (11) by two spokes, each spoke have an approximately horizontal port (8, 9) followed by a nearly vertical part (5, 6). At the bend (A, C) between these two parts and just above their junction (B, D) with the boss, the spokes are deformed by partial flattening. These portions are sufficiently strong to transmit all steering forces, but provide zones of progressive collapsing in the event of a collision, to protect the driver. These deformations can be made by using suitably shaped forming blocks during fabrication of the spokes, and can be covered with conventional sleeving after assembly.
