Abstract
265,507. Reed, C. E. Nov. 2, 1925. Borehole apparatus.-A rotary well drill comprises a cage mounted in a recess in the body of the apparatus and carrying a rotary reamer, and means for holding the cage in position. The drill head 1, Fig. 1, is provided with rolling cutters 6, 16 and a core tube 27 which may be removed if desired, and is threaded to a reamer block 46 provided with lateral recesses receiving cages 45, the ends of the cages having grooves which slidably receive bearing pins 49, 50 for rolling reaming-cutters 44; a plug 52 holds the pins 49 and similar plugs may be provided for the pins 50. A sleeve 58 holds the cages and the core tube in position. Flushing fluid passes round the core tube and through ports 3<x>. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the sleeve 58 and core tube are omitted, and the cages 45 are pressed into operative position by a block 53 pressed by a spring 54 bearing against an adjustable abutment 55, the cages having dovetail dowels 56 engaging grooves in the block 53 or having at their upper ends fins engaging guide grooves in the reamer block; in this arrangement, when the tool is being withdrawn from a well, on engagement of the cutters 44 by the well casing, the cages recede into the reamer block to permit passage of the tool through the casing.
