Abstract

265,422. Robertson, T. E., (Power Specialty Co.). April 10. 1926. Walls.-A fluid-cooled furnace wall comprises metal tubes A having one or more longitudinal radially projecting ribs B welded or otherwise integrally connected to the furnace chamber side of the tubes and non-metallic refractory material moulded into intimate contact with the tubes and ribs and interlocked with the ribs to form a wall portion shielding the tubes against direct absorption of radiant heat. The material C preferably is placed in position in a plastic condition and set rigid by the heat absorbed from the furnace. For this purpose " plastic firebrick " composed of ground firebrick and a clay binder may be used. The ribs B preferably have their edges exposed on the inner face of the wall, and they may have elongated openings to receive reinforcing bars F. The material C may extend to the outer face of the wall, or the outer face may be formed by a metal sheathing D enclosing a body E of insulating material preferably thick enough to engage a small portion of each tube A, bolts passing through the sheathing being tapped into spacer lugs A' welded to the outer sides of the tubes. The material E may be kieselguhr, but preferably it is a cement composed principally of mineral wool, asbestos, and a suitable binder, and set in a similar manner to the material C. The tubes may have out-turned upper and lower ends connected by headers to the water circulation of a boiler.
