[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In heat-exchange apparatus, such as watertube boilers, means are provided for absorbing and re-radiating, heat from the flue gases or other heating fluid. The gases passing in the direction F, F<1>, F<2>, F<3>, F<4>, Fig. 1, from the fire space 1 pass over plates 8 which are between the water pipes 3, 6, 9. These plates absorb heat and then radiate it to the pipes 3 &c. ; the plates may be waved in section, as shown in Fig. 2, or straight. To increase their effect they may be of iron, aluminium, or copper, or of silica, stone, asbestos coated with iron phosphates or oxides, or carbonates of lead. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the plates 8 are replaced by tubes of various cross-sectional shapes through which the flue gases circulate. To vary the heating effect, the plates 8, Fig. 5, are counterbalanced by a weight 14, so that they may be lowered to varying extent into the pipe spaces 9 or raised into an extension 15 above the flue. In another construction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the plates may be articulated and collapsed, partially or wholly, to vary the heating effect. In another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), short curved plates are hinged to parallel bars so that by moving one bar relatively to the other, the direction in which the curve of each plate concentrates the heat may be changed towards or away from the adjacent water pipe. The absorption plates may be applied to retorts and coke ovens.
