Abstract

265,390. Harrison, T., and Harrison, J. Feb. 19, 1926. Pipes and tubes.-Elbows or tees are produced by pressing a heated block of metal between a pair of dies to give it the required configuration and then pressing it between another pair of dies in a direction at right angles to the first pressing, punches being provided with the dies for hollowing the limbs; one of the first pair of dies has a semi-cylindrical recess and its co-operating die has a semicylindrical recess and a cylindrical recess extending from it to receive one limb of the tee. The metal block is first pressed to shape in a pair of dies a, b having coacting semicylindrical recesses c, f to shape the horizontal limb e, the recess f having a cylindrical extension to shape the vertical limb h. The recesses are' bounded by bevelled edges d, g to assist in the shaping of the piece and a small gap may be provided in these bevelled edges to form a lug k for handling purposes. The upper die a is provided with a punch l for hollowing out the vertical limb. A space f<1> is left above the vertical limb of the tee to receive the displaced metal. The tee is then pressed in a second pair of dies o, n having semi-cylindrical recesses m terminating in cylindrical recesses to receive the horizontal limb e. A mandrel s prevents buckling of the already hollowed limb h, and the mandrel may have a flange t fitting recesses in the dies to keep it in position. Punches r, r<1> are provided for hollowing out the limb e, the displaced metal filling the space f<2>.
