Abstract

Presses; cylinders; framing and mounting; working valves.-In a sausage-filling machine wherein the ram of the filling cylinder is operated by an hydraulic piston, the hydraulic valve is connected with control means so adapted that, on release, the valve is moved automatically to shut the inlet and outlet ports. As shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder 5 is supplied with water from a valve chest 7 having an inlet 7<a>. The valve 6 is kept against its seating by a spring 6<a> and is carried by a rod which is under the influence of a spring 8 which tends to move the valve to the right and, in the limit, to put the inlet port 5d in communication with the exhaust port 5<c>. A foot lever 9, having a spring-actuated catch 10<a> thereon, is connected to the valve rod and when it is depressed moves the valve to the left. When the pedal is depressed to the dotted line position, the catch 10<a> engages a projection 11<a> on a member 11 and the inlet port 5d is closed. Further depression opens the inlet port and the piston 4 rises. If the operator removes his foot, the pedal 9 rises until the catch 10<a> engages the projection 11 and the piston 4 becomes stationary. To allow the piston to return by gravity, the catch 10 is disengaged and the pedal is allowed to rise to its upper position. In a modification which is more suitable for horizontal cylinders, the piston is return hydraulically, an inlet port being provided for each side of the piston and the exhaust port being centrally disposed. The inlet port 5d is preferably of triangular shape so that as the port is uncovered the rate of increase in the opening will gradually become greater and vice versa. The supports 18, 19 for the cylinder 5 are provided with grooves 18<a>, 19<a> to receive a large cylinder if the available water pressure renders it desirable. One of the Provisional Specifications states that the piston may be returned by spring or equivalent means.
