Abstract
264,836. Borer, P. Jan. 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Peeling potatoes, apples, &c.- In a machine for peeling potatoes, apples, and the like, the potatoes &c. contained in a hopper 1 are dropped one by one on to pronged supports 3 mounted on a turntable 2 by which they are carried past resilient peeling-knives to a discharge device which delivers them to a shoot 18. The hopper 1 has a bottom closure 1<b> movable in a horizontal plane on a hinge 1<d> associated with a torsion spring 1<e> which tends to keep the hopper closed. The closure 1<b> has a depending pin 1<c> which contacts with pins on the table 2 whereby a potato is released whenever a support 3 is positioned to receive it. The knives are carried in groups on arms 7 - - 10 on a central stationary shaft 2a and are arranged as shown in Fig. 6, the cutting edges 11<a> of the rear row of blades 11 registering with the gaps in the front row. The knives a- - d are arranged to operate on the potato at different angles and, during the rotation of the table 2 the supports 3 are revolved slightly by the engagement of pins 12 with teeth formed on the support 3. After passing the knives a- - d the supports 3 are revolved sufficiently to permit a set of knives to peel one end of the potato. The toothed parts of the supports 3 then engage a toothed stop to present an entirely fresh surface to another group of knives which peel the potatoes entirely except for the portion concealed by the supports 3. The discharge device comprises two stationary discs 13 having ramp 13<a> at their upper portions which engage and separate spring-pressed forks 16 carried by arms 15 on a rotary shaft 14. The lower parts of the discs 13 are cut away to allow the forks 16 to come together and enter the potato which is thereby lifted from the platform 3, then in the discharge position, and carried by arms 15 to the shoot 18. The unpeeled part of the potato is peeled during this movement by an auxiliary set of knives, and the forks 16 are then withdrawn by the ramps 13a allow the potato to fall into the shoot 18. The table 2 is rotated by toothed gearing 4, 5, 6.
