[Class 28 (ii)] A machine for peeling and coring apples and the like comprises a rotary head carrying a series of pronged rotary holders and a. corresponding series of radially disposed peeling and coring units actuated in turn by cam surfaces on a central stationary spindle. As shown, the machine has holders 20 carried on a chain 16 which also drives the head 11 about the stationary cam shaft 12, only one peeling and coring unit, mounted in a framework 30, being shown for clarity. The apples are manually impaled on the prongs 27 of the holders which are rotated by a pinion 23 cooperating with a toothed rack 24, slides 25 being provided to support the chain where it is not engaging either sprocket. The peeling knife 27 is mounted on a rod 38 which is carried by arms 34, 36 in slots which allow it to follow the shape of the apple, pressure being applied by a pair of springs 40. A segmental gear 43 carried on a bell-crank lever actuated by a roller in a cam slot 46, engages a pinion 33 to swing the tool guiding arms 34, 36 through nearly 180 degrees so that the peeling tool sweeps over almost the whole surface of the rotating apple. In order to bring the peeling tool into engagement with the apple at the beginning of its movement and to disengage it for the return swing a slotted bar 52 hinged to an arm 51 is adapted to press the rod 38 away from the apple under the action of a cam surface 55. Coring is accomplished by a coring spoon 28 being lowered towards the apple by a cam operated lever 61, the cut core being ejected by a plunger 66 passing through the centre of each holder raised by a cam surface 68. A scoop 69 removes the finished apple from the holders.
