Copying-telegraphs; secret transmission by automatic variaticn of speeds of synchronized transmitter and receiver shafts.-In systems employing synchronized transmitting and receiving cylinders secrecy is maintained by the provision of means for varying the speed of the cylinders automatically-during the transmission and reception. At each station a shaft 2, Fig. 1, driving the cylinder is driven through gear wheels 3, 5, 4 from the shaft 1 of the motor, the wheels 3, 4 being secured to the shafts 1, 2 respectively, and the wheel 5 being carried by a frame 6 which is oscillated about the axis of the shaft 1, 2 by an arm 7 connected to a stud 8 carried by a gear wheel 10 engaging a gear wheel 11 on the shaft 1. The variation of speed of the shaft 2 is regulated by engaging the stud 8 in one or other of the holes 9, Fig. 3, in the wheel 10. Specifi cation 153,597 is referred to.
