Abstract

263,195. Fibremo Soc. Co-operative. Dec. 19, 1925, [Convention date]. Enamelling, vitreous; enamels. - Fibrous cement articles are enamelled by first drying and de-greasing them by treatment in a muffle furnace, then applying a mixture of vitreous enamel and a flux mixed to the consistency of cream and finally firing the coated article. The flux comprises silica, red lead, borax and nitrate of potash mixed together and melted in a furnace. The fluid product is poured into cold water and powdered by crushing. As a specific example, the flux may contain silica 4 parts, red lead 6 parts, borax 3 parts and nitrate of potash 1 part. For a white enamel 1 part of the flux is mixed with 0.5 parts of oxide of tin and 0.2 parts of cryolite. Naples yellow and blue enamels are obtained by mixing the flux with naples yellow and cobalt oxide respectively. For an ivory enamel 100 parts of flux are mixed with 1 part of antimoniate of potash, 2 parts of hydrated oxide of iron, and one part of zinc oxide. Other colouring-agents may be mixed with the flux to produce enamels of any particular shade.
