Abstract
262,924. Eckford, F. G. Dec. 7, 1925. Non-reactive steering-mechanism.-An apparatus adapted to check small movements on either side of a neutral position and to allow free movements of greater amplitude, comprises two opposed cylinders with interconnected pistons and fluid passages in the pistons and cylinder walls. In the application to a motor vehicle steering-gear shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the combined cylinder casing c is clamped to the axle a and the pistons j are both connected to one arm e' of a spindle e to which is secured outside the casing an operating arm f connected by a link g to the steering track rod. Each piston is provided with a spring controlled lift valve k and with a side hole l and groove m which co-operate with a hole n and a passage o leading to the end of the cylinder to prevent any restriction of movement of the two pistons when away from the central position. When at or near the central position liquid can only escape from either cylinder through the passages p, o, q and a small leak r<1> in a plug r. A safety valve s is provided. The whole of the apparatus is intended to be filled with liquid, and to reduce interference by any foreign air, the passages p are led into the cylinders at their highest points and not as shown on the drawings. The throttling passage r<1> may be formed in the safety valve s. In a modification the two cylinders are in line and the two pistons are connected by a toothed rack which is engaged by a sector secured to the shaft e.
