Fluid-pressure.-A fluid-pressure brake mechanism, as described in Specification 236,193, comprising double-acting main and auxiliary pistons in the same cylinder under the control of reversing valve mechansim in the main piston, the valve mechanism being provided with a lostmotion connection with one of the pistons to allow for direct operation of the brakes, is connected on opposite sides of its pistons with corresponding parts of a separate valveless auxiliary cylinder having one or two double-acting pistons. When the auxiliary cylinder contains a single piston, the piston may be axially connected with the main piston. The main piston 3 and auxiliary piston 3<a> contained in the cylinder 1 are connected respectively to piston rods 5, 5a extending through opposite ends of the cylinder and connected to the brakes. To apply the brakes, the reversing valve mechanism 40, contained in the main piston 3 is moved by a sleeve 20 having limited lost motion with respect to the main piston, causing exhaustion of air from between the pistons by connection with the intake manifold of the vehicle engine and admission of air to the ends of the cylinders, which are connected by a pipe 42<g>, The operation of the separate auxiliary cylinder is brought about by pipe connections. In the arrangement shown, the piston 52 of the auxiliary cylinder 51 is coaxial with the main cylinder pistons and is secured to the piston rod 5 of the main piston 3, the pipe connections being an extension of the pipe 42<g> and a pipe 42<h>. A yoke 5b connects the auxiliary piston rod 5<a> with the brakes. To release the brakes, the valve mechanism 40 is moved to admit air between the pistons of the main cylinder and to exhaust air from the ends of the cylinders. The invention is described and shown as applied to six-wheeled vehicles. Brakes for a trailer are operated by an auxiliary cylinder mounted on the trailer and connected to the main cylinder by pipes having flexible portions.
