Abstract

An axial top thrust mount for a vehicle suspension strut that includes a rubber insert is provided. The axial top mount comprises an axial thrust bearing held in place with a resilient insert comprising rubber or similar material. The rubber insert dampens axial movement of the top mount and reduces the likelihood of lock up under heavy loads.

Description

The use of an Axial Spherical Thrust bearing held in place with a rubber ring as the upper fixing for a Macpherson type suspension strut. Claim

Claims (1)

  1. Motorsport strut top mounts use a spherical bearing in a way that was not intended. They tend to lock up under heavy loads and 'stiffen' the suspension. A typical good quality bearing has the following description regarding loads. From a Rose bearing catalogue: The load figures given refer to the maximum static radial load which can be taken by the bearings. This load must be gradually applied, and under which no movement must take place. It is applied in a radial direction, and no fracture will take place under these conditions. These bearings can also support a load in the axial direction and amounts to approximately 15% of the maximum static radial load. The factor to be applied to the static loads to give dynamic capacities varies, depending on the application. As a rough guide for a reasonable life, the maximum dynamic load should be between % and 1/3rd of the maximum static load. EndsSo, for a typical top mount bearing the maximum static radial load is 7938kg. 15% of that is 1190kg and 'A of that is 300kg. Clearly the forces through a front strut are much higher than the manufacturers recommend for a high quality spherical bearing. With an equivalent axial thrust bearing the dynamic Load Rating is 6600kg -22 times the load of a spherical -it is designed for this type of application and remains articulate under high loadings. The use of this bearing is difficult as the ball falls away from it's seat either with a high damper rebound force or simply the unsprung weight of the suspension and wheel/tyre. The point of this Patent is the use of a rubber ring or pieces of rubber or similar below the spherical to hold the bearing together.
