Abstract

An apparatus is disclosed for indicating the boiling point of a fluid, the apparatus comprising: a control unit; and a probe suitable for insertion into the fluid. The probe comprising: a storage device; a heating arrangement suitable for heating the fluid; and a monitoring arrangement suitable for monitoring the temperature of the fluid heated by the heating arrangement. The control unit comprises a first connector and the probe comprises a second connector, the first connector and the second connector being attachable to form a communicative coupling between the probe and the control unit, and detachable to detach the probe from the control unit. The probe is configured to store on the storage device, probe calibration data for use by the control unit, and the control unit is configured to read the storage device to determine a calibration setting required for operation with said probe.

Claims (25)

CLAIMS:
1. An apparatus for indicating the boiling point of a fluid, the apparatus comprising: a control unit; and a probe suitable for insertion into the fluid, the probe comprising: a storage device; a heating arrangement suitable for heating the fluid; and a monitoring arrangement suitable for monitoring the temperature of the fluid heated by the heating arrangement; wherein the control unit comprises a first connector and the probe comprises a second connector, the first connector and the second connector being attachable to form a communicative coupling between the probe and the control unit, and detachable to detach the probe from the control unit; and wherein the probe is configured to store on the storage device, probe calibration data for use by the control unit, and the control unit is configured to read the storage device to determine a calibration setting required for operation with said probe.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the communicative coupling comprises an electrical connection configured for the transfer of an electrical signal between the probe and the control unit, the electrical signal being indicative of the temperature of the fluid.
3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the electrical signal comprises at least one component from a group consisting of: data indicative of the temperature of the fluid and a parameter indicative of the temperature of the fluid.
4. The apparatus of any one of claims 2 or 3, wherein the probe is calibrated to output the electrical signal in a form that is standardised based on the temperature of the fluid.
5. The apparatus of any one of claims 2 or 3, wherein the control unit is calibrated such that an interpretation of the electrical signal is standardised based on the temperature of the fluid.
6. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the storage device has stored thereon at least one dataset from a group consisting of: a unique identifying network address; and usage data.
7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the control unit is configured to read the dataset in the probe and to register the unique identifying network address in a unit memory.
8. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the control unit is configured to combine the probe calibration data with unit calibration data for interpreting the electrical signal received from the probe.

The apparatus of claim 6 or 7, wherein the control unit is configured to obtain the dataset from the probe and to perform at least one of the following tasks: check if the usage data exceeds a predefined threshold and, if so, generate a probe usage alert; measure a current usage time of the probe and update the usage data in the storage device based on the current usage time.
10. The apparatus of any preceding claim, configured to process a temperature measurement obtained by the monitoring arrangement in order to determine a boiling point temperature of the fluid.
11. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the probe comprises an inner chamber, the inner chamber comprising a port arrangement configured to allow entry of fluid into the inner chamber upon immersion of the probe into the fluid.
12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the port arrangement is configured to allow a substantial loss of fluid from the inner chamber when the fluid is boiling.
13. The apparatus of claim 11 or claim 12, wherein the probe comprises thermal insulation for restricting heat loss from the inner chamber.
14. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the control unit is configured to control the heating arrangement for heating the fluid; and to control the monitoring arrangement for monitoring the temperature of the fluid heated by the heating arrangement.
15. The apparatus of any preceding claim, comprising a connection arrangement for connection to an external power supply.
16. The apparatus of any of claims 1 to 14, comprising an internal power supply.
17. The apparatus of any preceding claim, further comprising a communication module for communicating data regarding the boiling point of the fluid to an external device.
18. The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the control unit is configured for providing a visual and/or audible indication of the boiling point of the fluid under test.
19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the visual indication is provided by one or more of: a number display or a light indicative of a temperature in a predetermined range.
20. The apparatus of any preceding claim, configured for indicating the boiling point of one or more fluids from a group consisting: hygroscopic fluid; brake fluid; coolant; or hydraulic fluid.
21. The apparatus of any preceding claim, configured as a portable handheld meter or benchtop unit.
22. The apparatus of any of claims 1 to 21, configured for integration into an automotive vehicle engine and/or engine management system.
23. An automotive vehicle comprising an apparatus according to any preceding claim.
24. A method for measuring the boiling point of a fluid using an apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 22, the method comprising the steps of: inserting the probe into the fluid; heating at least a portion of the fluid; monitoring the temperature of the heated portion of the fluid; and determining the boiling point of the fluid based on the monitored temperature of the heated portion of the fluid; wherein the boiling point is determined using the calibration data stored on the probe.
25. A method of calibrating control units and probes such that any of said probes may be connected to any of said control units to form an apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 22, the method comprising: calibrating each probe to output an electrical signal with a parameter that is standardised based on the temperature of the fluid; storing probe calibration data in the storage device of each probe; and calibrating each control unit such that an interpretation of an electrical signal input is standardised based on the temperature of the fluid.
