Abstract
A lifting hook safety lock comprises a central element so shaped that when inserted into the circular portion of a lifting hook it cannot rotate out of the locked position. The shaped central element is accompanied by two side plates one to each side held in place by fixing bolts. The central element may provide a suitable space to accommodate for example a shackle. It may also be impossible for the central element to exit a lifting hook at the throat opening.
Description
Description
Lifting Hook Safety Lock (UKLOK) This invention relates to a device to ensure against a lifting hook becoming detached from the load it is lifting /moving.
The lifting hook safety lock or UKLOK proposed consists of a robust central element which fits within the central, circular portion of the hook. This element is so shaped as to provide a suitable space to accommodate for example, a shackle.
The central element is shaped such that once inserted into the hook it can't rotate. Side plates are attached, one to each side of the hook, securing the central element by fixing bolts which are passed through both sides and through the central element.
The circular part of the hook is greater in diameter than the throat opening of the hook making it impossible for the central shaped element to exit the hook at the throat opening whilst the shape of the central shaped element can't rotate within the circular portion of the hook due to its shape.
The Lifting Hook Safety Lock (UKLOK) may be manufactured in a variety of sizes and materials.
Background
Crane and other lifting hooks are normally provided with a design feature which prevents the hook becoming unintentionally detached from the item that is being lifted. The afore mentioned design element (a relatively small) catch or latch is not sufficiently robust to withstand rough handling.
In the case where personnel or expensive items are being lifted or lowered in, for example a conveyance, the possible unintentional detachment could be catastrophic.
When a hook is the means of attaching a load to a crane or other lifting machine, a substantial locking device is required to prevent unintentional detachment.
