Abstract

261,034. Hellsing, K. G. F. Nov. 7, 1925, [Convention date]. Cam-and-lever actuated pumps; tappetactuated pumps; disconnecting actuating mechanism; stroke, varying. - In a fuel pump for internal-combustion engines &c., the plungers 3, 4 are actuated by a reciprocating rod 13 carrying a pivoted governor weight 15 which normally engages a sliding rod 9 provided with a cam 10 which actuates levers 5, 6 engaging the plungers. The rod 9 is moved down by a projection 14 on the end of the rod 13. The rod 13 is driven by a pair of eccentrics 22, 23 on the engine shaft through a slotted member 26 in which the end of the rod is slidably mounted. The member 26 may be adjusted towards the left by a hand lever 28 to vary the time of the pump stroke relatively to the crank cycle of the engine and thus produce reversal of the engine. If the speed of the engine increases beyond a certain point, the weight 15 becomes disengaged from the rod 9, and the pumps cease to operate until the speed is sufficiently reduced to enable a spring 19 to pull the weight into engagement again. The spring 19 may be adjusted by a lever 20. The stroke of the plungers may be varied by means of set screws 30, 31 engaging the levers 5, 6. In another form, the rod 9 is moved in both directions by governor weights 15 pivoted at opposite ends of the rod 13. Other forms comprise the following modifications : (1) A projection on the weight 15 normally slides on a surface on the rod 13; (2) the weight is pivoted to the rod 9 and normally engages a projection on the rod 13, but is disengaged therefrom at excessive speed; (3) the rod 9 is replaced by an oscillating plate provided with a cam for operating the levers 5, 6, and actuated by a governor weight carried by an arm which is oscillated by the eccentric; (4) the rod 13 carries a latch nor. mally engaging the rod 9, and adapted to be dis. engaged therefrom by the governor weight at excessive speed; (5) a latch member is disengaged from the rod 9 by a lever when the governor weight fails at excessive speed to move the latter out of the path of the latch member; (6) a tappet on the rod 9 engages projections on the levers 5, 6, and, when the governor weight ceases to actuate the rod, the latter is held stationary by a spring-pressed plunger engaging it; (7) the levers 5, 6 are actuated by an intermittently rotating cam driven by a ratchet wheel actuated by a governor weight pivoted to an arm which is oscillated by the rod 13. A spring pawl on another oscillating arm engages the ratchet.
