Lathes; screws, inserting; tapping; taps; lathe and like centres and drivers. -In a machine for plugging holes left after boring out knots or other faults, the hole is first screwthreaded by the action of a tap 33, and a wooden plug is then inserted, the plug being trimmed and screwthreaded externally as it is being forced into the hole. The tap is rotated and traversed by a shaft 17 provided with a screwed end 27 working in a two-part bush 29 adjustable for wear. The shaft is rotated by a spur wheel 26 gearing with a long pinion 16<1> on a countershaft 16 rotated from a bevel-driven shaft 15 through gearing 22, 23 and a reversing clutch 21 with an operating handle 40. At the top of its upward travel, the wheel 26 disengages the clutch by striking a stop 49 on a sliding rod 47 provided with a stirrup 46 engaging a lever 45 connected to the clutch rod 38, and the tap comes to rest with its reduced end 33' projecting above the timber 35. A wooden block A to form the plug is placed on the end of the tap being engaged by points 33<11>, and is pressed down by a ball-bearing plate 67 actuated by a handle 69, whilst the clutch 21 is actuated to start reverse rotation of the shaft 17. As the block A descends it is trimmed and threaded by saw cutters 73, 74 carried in a pivoted bracket 64 adjusted by means of a bolt 82. At the bottom of its descent, the wheel 26 disengages the clutch again. The timber is held down by an arm 59 connected to a foot lever (not shown).
