Abstract
260,725. Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., Viale, S. M., and Towns, H. L. Sept. 19, 1925. Screw propellers.-In screw propellers wherein the pitch of the blades is automatically varied by centrifugal force, a weighted lever pivoted to the propeller hub and provided with a crank or eccentric is connected directly or by a link to each propeller blade. Means for locking the adjusting mechanism is provided, and the blades may be separately adjusted for obtaining initially an equality of setting. The blades are carried in sleeves 5 in sockets on the boss 2 and the sleeves have lugs 16 which are connected by adjustable links 14 to cranks or eccentrics 13 on the pivots 10 of bell-crank levers 9 the ends 12 of which are bob weights 11 arranged to move radially. The pivots 10 are supported in brackets 8 on the hub. The arms 18 of the bell crank lever are connected by links 19 to a collar 20 adjustably secured to a sleeve 23 slidable on the hub against a spring 22. The bell crank levers may be balanced by compensation weights 25. To hold the blades at any desired pitch, a brake shoe may be brought to bear on the blade or lever, or a positive lock such as a ratchet and pawl gear may be employed.
