Description
I
AN ARRAY AND A KIT OF PARTS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an array, and more specifically, an array comprising a plurality of members, each member comprising a patterned surface. The invention further relates to a kit of parts for providing the array.
Background of the Invention
Recently, there has been increased interest in providing patterned installations in home and commercial settings. For example, patterned decking and cladding installations have become more popular due to their potentially striking appearance, especially when the pattern is geometric. Geometric patterns such as chevrons, 'Greek key' motifs and 'zig-zags' are amongst the most popular designs, although other designs are also seen and desired.
However, providing a repeated pattern, especially a geometric pattern, is challenging across a large area. For the design to have the required aesthetic properties, the pattern repeat must be very accurate, as human eyes are drawn toward even the smallest inconsistencies. Additionally, where the pattern is constructed by cutting timber batons or similar, creating a pattern can be very labour intensive, increasing cost. Finally, the materials and/or cutting directions required to provide each pattern are very specific. This specificity is increased as installation spaces can vary significantly in their shape and dimensions, such that the process of calculating the installation of an aesthetic pattern has to be started from scratch for each space.
Objects and aspects of the present invention seek to address at least the above issues.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention, there is provided an array comprising a plurality of members, each member comprising a patterned surface, the patterned surface comprising a pattern that regularly repeats along the length of each member and intersects at least one edge of each member, wherein the length of each member is exactly divisible by the repeat length of the pattern, wherein each member within the array is positioned such that the equation: sin 0 = (9) is satisfied, wherein 0 is the angle between the pattern and the at least one edge of the member it intersects, g is the gap between adjacent members, and z is the pattern continuation distance between adjacent members.
In this way, there is provided a plurality of members that may be used in a versatile manner to create an array with various patterns depending on the requirements of the installers. Ensuring each member's length is exactly divisible by the repeat length of the pattern allows the members to be positioned end to end to provide a pattern over the required area. Additionally, the criterion concerning the gap between adjacent members within the array ensures the pattern repeats as required without interruption in a second direction. As such, the array defined above allows a pattern to be repeated in two dimensions without interruption and for installers to rapidly provide the array due to the prefabricated nature of the members themselves.
The pattern continuation distance is considered to be the straight line distance between the end of the pattern on one member and the continuation point of the pattern on an adjacent member.
It is envisaged the gap (g) is a positive number, although in some embodiments g is equal to zero. Preferably, g is a positive number. More preferably, g is greater than mm.
Preferably, the pattern intersects opposing edges of each member. More preferably, the opposite edges are the longest edges of the member.
Preferably, the pattern comprises straight lines. Preferably, the pattern comprises a plurality of parallel straight lines. More preferably, the pattern consists of straight lines. More preferably, the pattern consists of parallel straight lines. The use of straight lines may be advantageous in providing a geometric pattern across the array.
Preferably, each member is substantially rectangular or substantially cuboidal.
Preferably, each member is substantially square or substantially a cube. The use of rectangles, cuboids or squares or cubes may be advantageous in increasing the ease of installation of the array.
Preferably, at least one edge of a first member within the array abuts at least one edge of a second member within the array.
Preferably, each member has at least one long edge and the pattern intersects at least one long edge of each member. More preferably, each member has two long edges and the pattern intersects both long edges of each member.
Preferably, each member comprises a composite material. More preferably, each member comprises a core layer and a covering layer. Preferably, the core layer comprises fibre. Preferably, the composite layer comprises a filler material.
Preferably, the composite comprises a polymer.
Preferably, the core layer is hard compared to the covering layer. Such a feature may improve each members feel without compromising its strength. Preferably, the covering layer comprises a textured surface. More preferably, the textured surface has the appearance of natural wood.
Preferably, each member is a decking panel. Alternatively, each member is a cladding member.
Preferably, the plurality of members is supported on a frame. Preferably, the frame is substantially vertical. Preferably, the frame comprises timber members More preferably, the frame is a timber frame.
Preferably, the length of each member is between 5000 mm and 2000 mm. more preferably, the length of each member is around 3600 mm.
Preferably, the width of each member is between 150 mm and 250 mm. More preferably, the width of each member is around 196 mm.
Preferably, each member within the array is substantially identical. Such a feature may increase the ease of installation of the array, as there is no need for the installer to differentiate between members.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit of parts for providing the array as hereinbefore described. Preferably, the kit of parts comprises at least one frame member.
The kit of parts may comprise members with any of the features discussed in relation to the first aspect of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 depicts a first array according to the present invention; Figure 2 depicts a second array according to the present invention; Figure 3 depicts a third array according to the present invention; Figure 4 depicts a fourth array according to the present invention; and Figure 5 depicts the space between members with an array according to the present invention.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is depicted an array 100 comprising a plurality of members 110 according to the present invention. As can be seen from Figure 1, each member 110 within the array 100 is substantially identical, and includes a pattern 120 extending across its surface and intersecting the long edges of the members at an angle. Each member 110 is substantially rectangular with a length of 3600 mm and a width of 196 mm.
The members 110 are held in position within the array on a frame (not shown). The members 110 are fixed to the frame via screws, though suitable alternative fixing means such as nails or an adhesive are envisaged.
Each of the members 110 is spaced from its neighbours such that a gap is present between the long edges of adjacent members 110. The short edges of each member 110 are envisaged to abut a short edge of an adjacent member 110, although this is not shown. As positioned in Figure 1, the members 100 form a first patterned array 100.
Figure 2 depicts a second array 200 formed of the members 110 shown in Figure 1.
The members 110 are identical to those described in relation to Figure 1. However, the pattern of the second array 200 differs from the first array 100. The ends of the members 110 are staggered in the second array 200, whereas they were aligned in the first array 100. As such, the same members 110 can be used to create both the first 100 and second 200 arrays, with the only variation being in the position the members 110 are mounted on the frame (not shown).
Figure 3 depicts a third array 300, again using the members 110 of Figures 1 and 2. Again, the pattern of the third array differs from that of the first array 100 and the second array 200, as the members 100 are mounted such that their ends extend across the array 300 in a stepwise fashion.
Figure 4 depicts a fourth array 400, once more using the members 110 seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Again, the pattern extending across the array 400 differs form that previously illustrated due to the positioning of the members 110, on the frame (not shown).
Turning to Figure 5, the spacing between the members 110 is illustrated in more detail. Here, a first member 1001 is spaced from a second member 1002 by a gap 1003. To ensure the visual integrity of the pattern across the gap 1003, the gap width (g) divided by the pattern continuation distance (z), the straight line distance between the end of the pattern on one member and the continuation point of the pattern on an adjacent member, must be equal to Sin(0), where 0 is the angle between the pattern and the edge of the member it intersects.
As can be seen from Figures 1 to 5, the present invention allows for a variety of different patterns to be provided in an array 100, 200, 300, 400 using the same members 110. The pattern on each member 100 can be varied beyond that illustrated here. The limitations of Claim 1 define the conditions required for the member to be used to provide an array with a continuous surface pattern.
