260,243. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Oct. 21, 1925, [Convention date]. Cleansing-compositions.-Cleansing and emulsifying agents miscible with water comprise a soap or matter possessing soap-like properties, a lower aliphatic alcohol, and the oily products consisting principally of isobutyl and higher fatty alcohols obtined by the catalytic hvdrogenation of oxides of carbon or by " hydration " with sulphuric acid of gases obtained by cracking or similar operations. Other materials may be added, e.g. aliphatic, hydroaromatic, and aromatic hydrocarbons including benzine, paraffin wax, benzene and its homologues, naphthalene, the corresponding hydroaromatic compounds, or mixtures thereof. Saponaceous bodies specified are grain soap, soft soap, mixtures thereof, turkey-red oil, alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids such as isopropyl-naphthalene sulphonic acid, and their salts. Alcohols specified are ethyl alcohol, crude or pure methanol prepared synthetically or from wood, or mixtures thereof. In an example 200 lb. of oleic acid, 20 lb. of the 170-180‹ C. fraction of an oilv hydrogenation product of oxides of carbon. 150 lb. of ethyl alcohol, and 50 lb. of tetrahydronaphthalene are mixed, and treated warm with 45 lb. of caustic potash dissolved in 40 lb. of water. The product forms clear solutions with any proportion of water.
