Abstract

260,028. Salerni, P. M. July 16, 1925. Cutlery and like blades.-A hammer for forging steel for razor blades &c. is formed with a series of projections spaced apart in the direction of movement between the work and the hammer, and the work is moved relatively to the hammer so as to receive spaced blows on various areas followed by blows on adjoining or overlapping areas so as to produce a knotting, effect on the metal. Preferably the blows are delivered in three orders, the first spaced apart, the second covering the spaces between the first blows, and the third overlapping the other two. The strip A is drawn from a furnace B and moved stepwise between the hammer C and anvil D by feed wheels E, the face of the hammer C and preferably of the anvil D also being formed with projections C', D'. The spaces C<2>, D<2> between the first and second projections are twice the width of the projections and the next spaces C<3> D<3> are one and a half times the width of the projections. After each blow of the hammer they strip is fed forward a distance twice the width of the projections, with the result that series of blows are delivered to the strip in the three orders set out above. The same result may be obtained by varying the widths of the projections and spacing them equally or by making the spaces equal and the widths of the projections equal and varying the amount of the feed between the blows. Fig. 6 shows a self-setting anvil for equalizing the blows on the two sides of the strip, the curved bottom part D<2> of the anvil D resting on the curved face of the bed D<3> and being located by means of curved slots D<4> and pins D<5>.
