BLANK FOR STAPLES.
No. 339,191. Patented Apr. 6, 1886.
Wz'tnes's'emr 1917/ e411 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
JOHN T. JONES, OF IRON MOUNTAIN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PETER L. KIMBERLY, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLANK FOR STAPLES.
SPECIPICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 339,191, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed November 30, 1883. Serial No. 113,182,
(No model.)
tain, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blanks for Staples, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved blank. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar View of a modified form of the blank. Fig. 4 is a view of a staple made from said blank.
The object of my invention is to produce a blank which, by a series of paralleltransverse cuts, can be divided up into lengths, which after being bent will constitute finished staples having taper legs and a bow of uniform cross-section. To this end I form, by rolling, a blank having the shape shown. Its central portion, a, for the length required. for the bow of the staple, is made with parallel sides or faces, and from the part a toward each edge the plate is beveled, as shown at b, the bevel being formed on one face or side only, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, or on both sides or faces, as indicated in Fig. 3. This blank, by a series of parallel cuts, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) is to be cut up into lengths, which are by suitable dies bent into staple form, as seen in Fig. 4. The taper portions 1) form the legs, and the part a forms the bow of the staple.
The dies are so formed that that one which operates against the under or inner side of the bow will slightly round its edges at that point. The legs can be bent in a plane either parallel with or at right angles to those faces of the bow part which form part of the top and bottom faces of the blank.
I propose to roll these blanks from old steel 0 rails or the fag ends of steel rails.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. A staple plate or blank having parallel faces throughout the central portion, a, corresponding in length tothe bow of thestaple, and 5 staples, consisting in first forming a staple plate or blank with a central portion, a, having parallel faces and beveled end portions 1), then cutting said blank transversely into strips, and then bending each strip into staple form,
so that the tapered portions 1) shall form the legs, and the portion a shall form the bow of the staple, as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of November, 1883.
JOHN T. JONES.
