Abstract
A support structure for use with a ladder or similarly functioning access platform. The support structure has an extendible first section attached to an extendible second section, the first section being substantially perpendicular to the second section, wherein the first section is adapted to be laterally extendible from the side rails or stiles and the second section is extendible to allow ground engaging means located remote from the first section to contact the ground, in use, and a coupling for connecting the support structure to the stiles, the coupling being positioned remote from the connector. The support structure is preferably located near the mid-point between the top and bottom of the ladder and greatly improves the stability of the ladder in use.
Claims (37)
1. A height access apparatus which comprises: first side rails or stiles which support a plurality of rungs, the rungs being substantially equally spaced apart along the length of the side rails or stiles; second side rails or stiles which support either, one or more brace, the one or more brace extending between the second side rails, or a plurality of rungs, the rungs being substantially equally spaced apart along the length of the side rails or stiles; a connector to which the first side rails or stiles and the second side rails or stiles are attached; a support structure attached to the first side rails or stiles and/or the second side rails or stiles, the support structure comprising: an extendible first section attached to an extendible second section, the first section being substantially perpendicular to the second section, wherein the first section is adapted to be laterally extendible from the side rails or stiles and the second section is extendible to allow ground engaging means located remote from the first section to contact the ground, in use, and a coupling for connecting the support structure to the stiles, the coupling being positioned remote from the connector.
2. The support structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein, the connector is a top cap or top plate.
3. The support structure as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein, the coupling is positioned at least one fifth of the distance along the first and/or second rails or stiles from the connector.
4. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the coupling is positioned substantially one half of the distance along the first and/or second rails or stiles from the connector.
5. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the first section comprises a sleeve which accommodates an arm which is movable along at least part of the length of the sleeve to extend and retract the first section.
6. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the arm is rotatably mounted in the sleeve.
7. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the arm is fixedly connected to the extendible second section.
8. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the sleeve is provided with a collar which is inserted into the side rail or stile of the height access apparatus.
9. The support structure as claimed in any preceding claim wherein, the sleeve is rotatably mounted in the collar.
